Could replace Livramento: PL “sensation” has become a target for Newcastle

Newcastle United have endured an inconsistent start to the Premier League this campaign and may now be set to ramp up their interest in a long-term target to bolster their rearguard.

Newcastle United seek January reinforcements

Without question, Newcastle fans will feel their campaign could’ve went slightly better than it has so far, though they are still within touching distance of the chasing pack in the hunt for European qualification.

Eddie Howe will feel his side are slowly getting back on track. However, former Magpies defender John Anderson believes he will have a tough juggling act to gauge when trying to compete efficiently across all fronts.

He said via BBC Sport: “He sees the Premier League as the main priority because of wanting to be in the Champions League again next season. The League Cup comes next because it is a semi-final, and then it is the FA Cup and Champions League. Realistically, it is just about qualifying for the next round or stage.

“Somewhere along the line, the amount of games they are playing will take its toll so Howe is going to have to make changes. He has to rotate and give players game time.”

Reinforcements will be necessary, and Oscar Mingueza is on the Magpies’ radar and could make an £8 million move amid competition from Aston Villa for his signature.

Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Jorgen Strand Larsen is also admired by Newcastle after his summer saga nearly saw a transfer to St James’ Park come to fruition. Now, another Premier League star could have a similar dilemma.

Newcastle tracking Brentford star Michael Kayode

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are keen on signing Brentford star Michael Kayode and have been hot on his trail since 2023 when he pitched up at Serie A outfit Fiorentina.

Manchester City, Juventus, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are also keeping tabs on the full-back, who has made 24 appearances for the Bees this term.

With Tino Livramento the subject of interest from Manchester City, a move for Italy U21 international Kayode would make a great deal of sense. Nevertheless, it is difficult to envisage Brentford letting one of their key men depart mid-season with Keith Andrews having already described him as a “sensation.”

Tottenham Hotspur also retain an interest in the £14m Brentford man and it is easy to see why, given he has won 118 duels on league duty this term, per Fotmob. It’s easy to see why scout Ben Mattinson has heralded him as a “powerful runner.”

Howe clearly wants his side to kick on after a trying first half of the campaign and will now look to convince Kayode and other potential arrivals that the North East is the best place for their footballing development.

Man Utd now in pole position to sign £151,000-a-week England ace

Manchester United are now reportedly in pole position in the race to sign an England international this month.

Man Utd in pole position to sign England star

The Red Devils could be in for a busy month as they look to break into the top four and finally find some consistency under Ruben Amorim. INEOS already fixed their manager’s attack in the summer with an impressive overhaul and could now do the same to solve his midfield problems.

Having his say on the January transfer window, the Man United boss told reporters: “Sometimes I have one idea, Jason and the board have another idea. Every decision we make, we need to reach a common ground.

“That is really important because you don’t need to make everything for the manager because the manager can change and [then] you need to change everything.

It was an evening to forget for the Red Devils.

“But you also need to understand the manager understands the way of playing. If you don’t reach common ground the player would not come, so we just try to do that.”

On the transfer front, recent reports have suggested that Man United’s focus will be on their midfield this month, but it remains to be seen just who will arrive.

The likes of Ruben Neves have reportedly emerged as serious options as he looks to leave Al-Hilal in the winter window. With a return to the Premier League on the cards, United have reportedly contacted the Portugal international’s agent.

He’s not the only name on their shortlist, though. According to TeamTalk, Man United are now leading the race to sign Conor Gallagher, who is also looking to return to the Premier League this month.

Gallagher could replace Manuel Ugarte

It could be a case of one in, one out at Old Trafford. Recent reports have claimed that Galatasaray are prioritising a move to sign Manuel Ugarte from Man United this month, which would hand the Red Devils the perfect chance to welcome Gallagher.

Whilst not a like-for-like replacement, the England international would instantly offer far more energy at the heart of Amorim’s side as well as key versatility.

Unlike other targets, Gallagher is unlikely to cost United a hefty fee, either. Atletico Madrid have reportedly priced their midfielder at just €30m (£26m) in the new year in what is more than affordable for INEOS.

What could be a problem is Gallagher’s wage demands. In Spain, the former Chelsea man earns around £151,000-a-week, which would put him among Man United’s top 10 earners.

The Red Devils must decide whether they simply value Gallagher that highly in the January transfer window or whether they wait for the summer to land the likes of Adam Wharton or Elliot Anderson.

Varadarajan poses a serious challenge

The USACA elections take place on March 29, and Gladtone Dainty and his incumbents face a tough battle against an organised group headed by Ram Varadarajan. While Dainty has been so low key as to be invisible – much the same could be said of USACA under his leadership – Varadarajan, who was born in India and emigrated to the USA in 1982, has been on a media offensive as well as launching a slick website outlining his vision.”The response to the announcement of our team and the ideas and energy we bring has been fantastic,” Varadarajan said. “I am getting e-mails and calls from interested people all around the world telling me that US cricket needs new management and initiatives to take it to the next level. There is widespread support for our team and people are asking how they can help make change happen. We appreciate and are humbled by the outpouring of support.”It pains me that USACA has not been able to bring corporate commitment to cricket, the world’s second most popular sport. The last few years have seen a significant increase in the monies spent globally on cricket by corporate sponsors and commercial organisers. The new USACA will find a symbiotic way to match the support of corporate sponsors and professional cricket organizations with the grass roots development needs in America. My team and I are well suited for this task and are committed to its success.”John Aaron, who is standing for the post of USACA secretary, targets the readmission of the USA to the international fold as a priority. “For too long now our children and adult players have been unable to play and develop their cricket in the international arena due to the ICC’s suspension of the current administration. It is critically important for our team to be elected. We have harnessed the energy and chemistry needed to affect change in US cricket. We will strive to allow our players the opportunity to represent their country against the best in the world, and also create opportunities for the flow of capital needed to develop the sport in the very large US market.”

'We'll take appropriate decision' – BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has said that it would take “an appropriate decision” on the proposal received from Zee Telefilms to start a parallel cricket league. This was announced in a media release issued by Niranjan Shah, the board secretary. Lalit Modi, the BCCI vice-president who would usually handle such matters, was in London on Wednesday and could not be reached for comment.Inderjit Singh Bindra, also closely involved in the board’s commercial aspects and the marketing of the game, told Cricinfo, “The board has already made its stand clear in the press release issued by the secretary. We have received an application from Zee Telefilms and will consider it. I have nothing more to add on the subject at the moment.”Subhash Chandra, the head of the Essel Group which owns Zee, had announced that the Indian Cricket League, as it’s known, would have six teams with two Indian internationals, four overseas players and eight juniors in each side. He said they had got some big names but didn’t want to reveal anyone at this point.Earlier, Modi told that the ICL was not going to be feasible without the BCCI’s cooperation. “First, if he [Chandra] is planning a local tournament, he can’t use our sports facilities without our permission,” Modi said. “If he is roping in international players, that requires the sanction of BCCI and ICC and I haven’t heard about it till now. The [Indian] Board does not give private parties permission to do anything like this.”Interestingly, Modi himself had floated the idea of a similar league a decade ago, an idea that couldn’t progress beyond the BCCI’s red tape. One of those involved in that project wa Arun Lal and on Wednesday Lal gave a thumbs-up to Chandra’s plan. “This is the way forward”, Lal told Cricinfo. “There is too much time wasted on other things, like who will be the next coach, and we are skirting the real issues. The reason why Australia keep winning is not because of a coach. They are winning because they have a strong domestic structure that keeps churning out world-class players. They have the necessary academies that keep nurturing the talent.”The BCCI, Lal said, should channelise 90 per cent of its energies into this sphere of activity.. “This was what I felt eight years ago and this is what I still feel is theway forward.”Chandra, however, said the ICL was not competing with the BCCI but complementing it and did not foresee any clash on the issue. He insisted he wasn’t trying to do a Kerry Packer. “That was different. Kerry Packer had staged a coup by getting the big players on his side,” Chandra told , a Mumbai-based daily. “However, in the case of the Zee Group, we would continue to bid for BCCI telecast rights. The initiative that we would launch is about a talent hunt and a talent-building process.”The initiative to launch the ICL should be seen as a challenge taken up by the Essel/Zee Group in BCCI’s quest to improve Indian cricket. We are yet to get a reply from the BCCI. But the feedback so far is positive. While the previous regime was a control freak, things have changed now. Some within the current BCCI set-up are also thinking of creating a league format.”

Sri Lanka name 18-man squad

Injuries to two key players, Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas, have forcedSri Lanka’s selectors to name an expanded squad for the two-Test seriesagainst Pakistan, which gets underway at the SSC on Sunday. Both players have been named in an unusually large 18-man squad, subjectto fitness. Sri Lanka normally goes with a 15 or 16-man squad for a Test series, but Michael Vandort and Ian Daniel have been included as standby openers ifJayasuriya fails to recover from a thigh strain.Nuwan Kulasekera and Dammika Prasad, meanwhile have been named as cover for Vaas who is suffering from a side strain. Jayasuriya and Vaas were left out of the recently concluded one-day series which Pakistan won 2-0.Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain, Mahela Jayawardene, said on Wednesday thatJayasuriya had more chance of playing in the first Test than Vaas.”Sanath is recovering very well,” said Jayawardene. “If he thinks that he can manage a Testmatch and the physio also agrees, we will include him. We still have three more days to go. He is an experienced cricketer and we definitely would like to have him.””We don’t want to take any risks with Vaasy. Unless he is 100 percent fit we don’t want to play him. He is very important for the England tour.”Another fast bowler, Ruchira Perera, who is recovering from a hamstringinjury, has been ruled out of the series.Squad (subject to Sports Ministry ratification) MahelaJayawardene (capt), Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Sanath Jayasuriya,Upul Tharanga, Michael van Dort, Ian Daniel, Tillakaratne Dilshan, TilanSamaraweera, Chamara Kapugedera, Chaminda Vaas, Farveez Maharoof, LasithMalinga, Dammika Prasad, Nuwan Kulasekera, Dilhara Fernando, MuttiahMuralitharan, Malinga Bandara, Sajeewa Weerakoon.

'Everyone thinks this team is better than they actually are'

Ganguly’s plight was no excuse for India’s poor show, says Gordon © Getty Images

Sandy Gordon, the sport psychologist whose inputs played a big part in India’s run to the World Cup final two years ago, has blamed the unreasonable burden of expectation for the team’s failure to fulfil its potential. Talking to The Indian Express, Gordon said, “The problem is that everyone thinks that this team is better than they actually are. It is not a realistic approach.”Gordon qualified that remark by pointing out what is still unpalatable truth for most Indian fans. “This team has not won anything; for me it is a generation lost,” he said. “This team cannot sustain pressure, every time they have to go for the kill they fail. They are talented but they aren’t so good.” And according to him, the weakness was easily apparent. “Work ethic,” he said. “It is just not there. And it is not a team thing, it’s an individual thing to be consistent.”Gordon blamed mental frailty rather than technical glitches for the team’s failure to close out games. “They haven’t lost their ability to bat or bowl. The only way to win games is to execute the individual as well and the team game as planned.”Conventional wisdom has suggested that Sourav Ganguly’s travails with the bat had impacted on the team’s performance, but Gordon was not inclined to agree. “I think that’s an excuse really. Look at the way the Australian team covered up for Mark Taylor when he was out of form. This Indian team has a lot of leaders, it is just a matter of the other players stepping up to the plate.”With John Wright, who first sought Gordon out when the team was struggling, on his way out, Gordon believed that the next manager will need to have a better support system in place. “John Wright has appealed several times to the BCCI for a full time manager since 2002, but it’s fallen on deaf ears,” he said. “This team needs a full-time manager who can manage the team and let the coach just work on taking the team to the next level.”After a season that encompassed a demoralising home defeat to Australian and a disappointing draw against a weakened Pakistan side, Gordon suggested that the best way to revitalise ahead of new challenges was to shut out cricket and relax. “There could be the temptation to go back to the nets and the gym but I believe that mentally it could harm them,” he said. “They should instead look to ease their way back into the system as the season nears and recharge their batteries.”That particular view is shared by Greg Chappell, one of the named mentioned as India’s future coach. “Going into the nets would be the worst thing that the guys could do during the off season,” said Chappell. “They should do everything that keeps their mind off the game so they can come back fresh.”

South Africa complete domestic restructuring

South Africa has completed the restructuring of its domestic cricket, with the 11 provincial first-class sides merging into six regional ones. The move was taken by the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) to ensure the long-term financial viability of the game.Ray Mali, the president of the UCB, was satisfied with the partnerships had been forged to form the new sides, although Free State and Griqualand West were unable to come to an agreement. The UCB stepped in, and gave a 55% “shareholding” to Free State with the remainder going to Griqualand. The result, according to the UCB, will be improved overall quality and a commitment to lift amateur cricket at all levels. Sixteen teams, made up of the current 11 provinces and five new sides, will play a secondary, amateur competition and act as feeder teams. The new competition mirrors the success of rugby’s Super 12 competition, and means that South Africa now have the same number of first-class teams as Australia. Similar suggestions for regional cricket in England have encountered stiff opposition from the 18 counties.

Lehmann charged under ICC's Code of Conduct

Australian batsman Darren Lehmann faces suspension from the national team after he was charged under the International Cricket Council’s Code of Conduct. It follows a verbal outburst during yesterday’s triangular series match against Sri Lanka at Brisbane. The incident followed Lehmann’s return to the dressing room after he was run out at the end of a match-winning 72-run stand with Michael Bevan. The Sri Lankan team and management heard the outburst in their dressing room and lodged an official complaint with match referee Clive Lloyd.Lehmann immediately sent a letter of apology, and received a severe reprimand from Lloyd after the Sri Lanka team management appealed for leniency. The Code of Conduct charge has been laid by the ICC’s chief executive, Malcolm Speed.”As a result of an overnight investigation and on the basis of reports received from Australia I have decided to charge Darren Lehmann with a breach of Level 3.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct,” Speed said.”I am aware that Mr Lehmann has apologised for his actions and that the Sri Lanka team was reluctant to lay any formal charges. I have, however, carefully considered the situation and in the interests of eradicating racial vilification in international cricket I am bound to lay this charge.”If found guilty, Lehmann could be suspended for up to eight matches, so he may miss the start of next month’s World Cup in southern Africa.Level 3.4 of the ICC Code reads: “Using language or gestures that offends, insults, humiliates, intimidates, threatens, disparages or vilifies another person on the basis of that person’s race, religion, colour, descent or national or ethnic origin.”Sri Lanka team manager Ajit Jayasekera said: “It just happened on the spur of the moment and he apologised. As far as we are concerned, the matter is closed.”Australian Cricket Board chief executive James Sutherland said: “I have expressed to Darren the ACB’s disappointment in the incident and organised immediate counselling for him.”It is clear that he has acted in an undesirable manner and steps will be taken to see that behaviour such as this is not repeated.””I just said something I shouldn’t have,” Lehmann told reporters at Adelaide airport. “I apologised to the Sri Lankan team on their way off, it was in the dressing room, the heat of the moment and out of frustration.”

Australia overwhelm Pakistan

Lord’s was the venue for another `historic’ event, the grand finale of the NatWest Series between Pakistan and Australia. Tipped as a chance for Pakistan to avenge its defeat in the WC 99 final, it was far removed from it but more of a full confirmation that Australia are worthy World Champions. The end was horrifying for Pakistan because they suffered a defeat worse than in the World Cup, losing by 9 wickets this time. It may not have actually been one of their worst performances but certainly was disappointing, especially so, after Pakistan had lately shown an admirable resurgence of fighting spirit and reached the finals after defeating England thrice and Australia once.

Once more at Lord’s, batting first, the Pakistan team was absolutely off-colour, getting to only 152, nowhere near a `match winning’ total against a side as strong and well balanced as Australia. Surprisingly, the bowlers also proved as inefficient and ineffective as the batsmen. Not being able to create any impact, they allowed the Australians a comfortable victory by 9 wickets in 26 overs. Adam Gilchrist (76*), Ricky Ponting (35*) and Mark Waugh (36) romped their team home. After scoring a brilliant 79 in the last encounter against Australia, Saleem Elahi succeeded in snatching the opener’s slot from Shahid Afridi but failed to prove his class. He was out for 10 with Pakistan’s score at 28. The star opener Saeed Anwar (27) followed him, caught by Michael Bevan at long on after he foolishly skied a ball from Ian Harvey. It was a dismal start.

At 47 for 2 and 50 of the innings coming in the 16th over, it was by no means a promising start. With 2 more wickets falling in quick succession Pakistan was down in the dumps. While Yousuf Youhana (11) was run out attempting a run that was not there, Younis Khan offered an easy catch to Shane Warne in the slips and walked of. It brought Pakistan down to a disappointing 60 for 4.Giving no liberties to the batsmen to score runs and clinching wickets at the same time, Australia was in full command of the game. With only 78 runs in 25 overs Pakistan was in a precarious situation. Striving to get out of the tight corner, Abdur Razzaq tried to pull one from outside the off stump and was caught at mid wicket by Shane Warne off Brett Lee after scoring 24 useful runs.Pakistan suffered their biggest setback when Inzamzm-ul-Haq (23) playing well forward with his leg stretched fully was declared lbw off Shane Warne. Inzamam, a player capable of taking the side out of the worst crisis was distraught, for he thought there was enough doubt when playing so far forward. Most modern umpires would have given him that benefit. Strangely, the electronic indicator also did not come into operation. Pakistan was now down to 92 for 6.

Mahmood is clean bowled by Shane Warne

Facing a chaotic situation, Azhar Mahmood (1) was bowled by Shane Warne rendering Pakistan to 110 for 7. Then followed a valuable 41 run partnership between Rashid Latif (23) and Wasim Akram (17) and lifted the score to a more hopeful 151 for 8. But the tail did not have the nerve to survive any longer and Pakistan succumbed meekly to 152 in 42.3 overs. Shane Warne grabbed 3 wickets while Ian Harvey and Brett Lee shared 2 each.Pakistan’s insipid batting, timid approach and the tendency to throw away wickets in the wake of marvelously tight bowling by Australia were the factors responsible for its collapse. Saeed Anwar emerging as the highest scorer with only 27 runs showed how Pakistan’s batting lacked any substance and application.Defending a small target of 153, Pakistan bowlers were under tremendous pressure and despite a good line maintained by Wasim and Waqar, the openers Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh were not perturbed. They kept scoring runs with confidence picking up 39 in 10 overs. The bowlers failed to create an impact and the score kept mounting at a fast pace. Pakistan got a consolation break when Mark Waugh was run out in a mix up, gpong for a 3rd run from a shot off Razzaq after playing a solid innings of 36. Australia was 78 for 1.

Adam Gilchrist who had stood like an impregnable wall against Pakistan in almost all matches, completed his 50 in 77 balls with the help of 4 fours and 2 towering sixes hit off Razzaq. This was followed by 100 of the Australian innings in 22 overs. A grand victory for Australia was written on the wall. With the target getting closer and 9 wickets in hand, Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting went on the rampage. During his spree, Ponting also lifted Razzaq to square leg for a mighty six.The ultimate came when Gilchrist drove Azhar Mahmood to the 3rd man boundary to elevate the total to 156 for 1. Australia defeated Pakistan fair and square by an impressive margin of 9 wickets. Adam Gilchrist remained not out with a fabulous innings of 76 while Ricky Ponting was unbeaten with a quick fire 36 in 23 balls. It was Australia’s day all the way and with this marvellous performance, they overwhelmed Pakistan in all departments of the game. Not being able to clinch a wicket it was, in contrast, a day of gloom for the Pakistan bowlers.

Raphinha 2.0: Leeds could sign “the form player in the Premier League”

As they enter into the New Year, Leeds United will hope that their fine form in the Premier League continues.

Daniel Farke’s Whites now no longer look resigned to the drop, with two wins and two draws heading their way across a memorable December so far, pushing them six points clear of West Ham United, occupying the final relegation spot in the division.

Of course, there is still a lot of action that needs to take place before the season is over, with 21 huge clashes yet to be played.

However, everything is now pointing in the direction of the West Yorkshire titans being able to secure survival without breaking a sweat, with the January transfer window also helping them strengthen here and there to achieve this goal.

Leeds could seal statement deal in January

Reports have come out to suggest that Leeds will be somewhat stunted with what they can spend in the bumper window to come, owing to PSR regulations.

Considering their position in the table, that will not be music to the ears of supporters or indeed Farke.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, as per an update from Sky Sports, there could be some wiggle room for Leeds to still operate, with the Premier League newcomers reportedly eyeing up some attacking reinforcements, particularly down the wing, as Harry Wilson’s name is touted again.

Leeds’ failed move for the Fulham star was well documented in the summer, and with the Welshman coming into his own at Craven Cottage this season, it does appear unlikely that Marco Silva’s side would entertain losing him anytime soon.

Yet, with his deal in London set to expire in the summer, Leeds could be prepared to make an audacious swoop once more for the Cottagers’ number eight, as they potentially win themselves their new Raphinha in the process.

How Wilson can be Raphinha 2.0

Leeds really did win themselves an almighty coup when they landed the services of the scintillating Brazilian for only £17m in 2020, with the much-loved winger at Elland Road going on to be a £55m purchase for Barcelona, after he garnered a reputation for being a game-changing presence on English shores.

Indeed, without Raphinha’s consistent brilliance during the 2021/22 season, Leeds would have surely fallen back down to the Championship with a whimper, with the sensational South American’s 11 goals making him a crucial individual who, very much singlehandedly, kept his team above the dreaded drop zone at times.

Wilson will hope he can be seen in the same glowing light if he makes the shock switch from Craven Cottage to Elland Road a reality.

Indeed, the Wrexham-born attacker has already been lauded as “world-class” this season by Sky Sports pundit Steve Sidwell, when delightfully placing an effort past Dean Henderson earlier in the month.

With five goals and three assists next to his name for the season, it’s clear that Wilson is managing to stand out in the Fulham XI in much the same way Raphinha did week, in week out when calling Leeds home.

Blessed with a left foot made of gold, just like Raphinha, Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley has serenaded him as “the form player in the Premier League” right now, having picked up six of those goal contributions across a standout December.

With a bumper 71 goal contributions under his belt for the Cottagers, too, Leeds should have no divine right, whatsoever to poach the 67-time Wales international from Silva’s grasp next month.

But Leeds punched above their weight when picking up Raphinha all those years ago, and if Wilson is available for a cut-price fee given his contract situation, it’s a deal that must be explored, no matter how fanciful it feels.

If he were to join, survival would surely be even easier to reach, with Wilson’s “incredible” ability – as he was once labelled by his former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp – matched with the goalscoring prowess of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, making Leeds an even more tantalising prospect to behold in attack.
